Spotlighting REACH Grantees 2019 Accomplishments: Southern Nevada Health District

Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is a regional public health department based in Las Vegas, and they are a first-time recipient of the 2018 REACH grant. Focusing on African American and Hispanic populations, SNHD prioritizes smoking cessation, nutrition education, and access to healthy food.
They have shared with us some of their successes so far:
Food Pantry Event at the University of Nevada Las Vegas:
Through the REACH grant, the Southern Nevada Health District is working on the expansion of food pantry on the campus of University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). As part of the initiative, SNHD hosted an event to raise awareness of the UNLV Food Pantry. Fresh produce was donated by their local food bank, Three Square, increasing the pantry’s capacity to include fresh produce for the first time. The event was very successful and they gave out 5,000 pounds of apples, oranges, and sweet potatoes!
North Las Vegas Parks go Smoke-Free:
For the smoking cessation initiative, SNHD held a Park-goer Surveys and Cigarette Butt Clean Up event with local youths on April 27, 2019. Check out the photos to see the amazing work done by the youths!
SNHD also celebrated a legislative victory as the North Las Vegas City Council unanimously passed an ordinance banning smoking in some areas of public parks and recreation areas on May 22, 2019. Effective as of the vote, smoking and use of electronic cigarettes will be banned within 100 feet of athletic and spectator areas, restrooms, recreation facility entrances and playgrounds. This policy will cover 34 parks and recreational locations within the City of North Las Vegas.
