Spotlighting REACH Grantees: Southern Nevada Health District

The Southern Nevada Health District has an ongoing live radio show sponsorship on KCEP FM 88.1 (Power 88) radio show with a predominately African American listenership. The staff are the guests on the show and cover a variety of REACH topics on a monthly basis. This sponsorship has been ongoing for several years, and now incorporate REACH specific topics into the discussions.

To help support the REACH project, Nevada has offered free Nicotine-replacement therapy for southern Nevada residents that identify as African American or Hispanic. For Black History Month, their Facebook posts featured African American smokers who quit. This was related to the CDC TIPS campaign and they developed an African American focused tobacco cessation campaign to drive more call volume to 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

They are securing the main sponsorship of Jazz Fest from May-June 2020. This sponsorship will occur over five separate concerts with high levels of African American attendance. One of the REACH activities includes working with high profile community event organizers to implement tobacco-free policies at these events and also disseminate information on all of the REACH topics.

Through the REACH project’s designated community coalition, (Nevada Minority Health and Equity Coalition), as well as through their Community Health Worker, they are securing several “REACH sites” (Boys and Girls Clubs, faith-based organizations, YMCA, FQHCs, etc.) in the community. These REACH sites have allowed them to disseminate REACH related information and community resources. These relationships in REACH zip codes allow them to truly reach people where they live, work, play, and pray.

They also have an African American-focused Barbershop and Beauty Shop Outreach project. While this project isn’t funded through REACH, many REACH objectives are advanced through it. For example, barbershop clients are screened for hypertension and tobacco use. Tobacco-using clients are then referred to the Nevada Tobacco Quitline.
